Constipation in Children: A Common Concern for Parents
Constipation is a frequent issue in children and can cause discomfort, irritability, and anxiety for both the child and their caregivers. Fortunately, most cases can be managed with simple changes in diet, routine, and—when needed—medical support.
What Is Constipation?
Constipation in children is typically defined as:
- Fewer than 3 bowel movements per week
- Hard, dry, or painful stools
- Straining or withholding behavior
- Incomplete or difficult passage of stool
Common Causes: Low fiber intake, inadequate fluid consumption, toilet training challenges, holding in stool (fear of pain or using unfamiliar bathrooms), changes in routine, diet, or stress, certain medications or medical conditions
Signs to Watch:
- Abdominal pain or bloating
- Infrequent or painful bowel movements
- Soiling accidents (encopresis)
- Irritability or decreased appetite
Home Management Tips:
- Increase fiber: Offer fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes
- Encourage fluids: Water is best; limit sugary drinks
- Establish routine: Encourage regular toilet time after meals
- Exercise: Physical activity helps stimulate digestion
- Positive reinforcement: Avoid pressure or punishment
