Here’s Why Asthma Action Plans are So Important

Here’s Why Asthma Action Plans are So Important

An asthma action plan is a personalized written plan that helps you and your child manage their asthma daily and also in the event of asthma attacks and emergencies. Why is it so important?

Studies show that having an asthma action plan reduces symptom exacerbations, reduces visits to the Emergency Department, and improves overall quality of life. Asthma affects nearly 5 million children in the U.S. and is the leading chronic disease in youth under 18 years old.

With May being National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, it’s a good time to make sure your child has an Asthma Action Plan or to update it.

At Sima Stein, MD, located in San Jose, California, board-certified pediatrician Dr. Stein can educate you and your family about effective asthma treatments and develop a personalized treatment plan to help your child keep their asthma under control.

How do I know if my child has asthma?

While there’s no cure for asthma, a personalized action plan can help your child manage their symptoms. Asthma symptoms in children are the same as they are in adults, but they can be more severe because children have smaller airways.

Common symptoms include:

Experts don’t know the cause of asthma in children, but risk factors include a family history, obesity, and living in an area with high rates of pollution. Dr. Stein can diagnose your child if you notice these symptoms.

How to develop an asthma action plan

Asthma is the leading cause of emergency department visits for children. An asthma action plan developed with Dr. Stein can help reduce visits to the ER and help your child’s caregivers and school nurse know what to do if your child has an attack. An asthma action plan also helps your child manage their symptoms when you’re not around.

An asthma action plan includes:

We personalize your child’s plan to them and should be shared with your child’s school and other caregivers. Additionally, an asthma action plan for your child should be updated at least once a year.

During Asthma and Allergy Awareness month, take the time to make an appointment with Dr. Stein to create or update your child’s asthma action plan. Call our office or request an appointment online today.
