Flu Vaccine: What Parents Should Know

Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine?

● All children 6 months and older should receive a flu vaccine every year.
● Vaccination is typically done during the fall and winter months, when flu activity is at its peak.

● This annual vaccine helps protect children from catching the flu and experiencing serious complications.

Why Is the Flu Vaccine Important for Children?

● Children, especially those under 5 years old or with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, are more likely to experience severe flu-related complications.
● Potential complications include:
○ Pneumonia (lung infection)
○ Dehydration
○ Worsening of chronic conditions
○ Brain dysfunction (e.g., encephalopathy)
○ Sinus and ear infections
○ In rare cases, death

Even healthy children over 5 years old can become seriously ill from the flu or spread it to vulnerable family members, such as:
● Infants under 6 months (too young to be vaccinated)
● Adults over 65
● People with underlying health conditions

Common Flu Symptoms in Children

● Fever or chills (note: some children may not have a fever)
● Cough
● Sore throat
● Runny or stuffy nose
● Muscle or body aches
● Headache
● Fatigue
● Vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children than adults)
What About Children with Egg Allergies?
● In the past, flu vaccines were avoided in people with severe egg allergies, but this is
no longer a concern.
● Most flu vaccines are still made using eggs and may contain tiny amounts of egg protein.
● Studies show that severe allergic reactions in egg-allergic individuals are
extremely rare, and children with egg allergies should still be vaccinated.

Important Allergy Considerations
● Children who have had severe reactions to flu vaccines in the past, or who are
allergic to non-egg ingredients in the vaccine, should talk to their healthcare provider
before vaccination. Dr. Sima Stein, board-certified pediatrician based in San Jose, is
trained in evaluating which vaccines are right for your child. Call or book an appointment
online for further questions or concerns.
