Here's How a Travel Consultation Can Help If You're Planning an International Trip

Traveling with your children is one of the best and most educational things you can do for them. Exposing them to other languages and countries can give them an appreciation for the world and also help them learn about different cultures.

International travel also exposes them to risks they may not face in the United States. Before embarking on a global adventure with your family, you should schedule a travel consultation with board-certified pediatrician and travel health expert Sima Stein, MD, at her clinic in San Jose, California.

Here’s how a travel consultation can help keep your family safe during your trip.

Determine if you need vaccines for your trip

In the United States, children receive immunizations for diseases such as chicken pox, mumps, and measles. However, disease risks differ in other countries. For example, if you’re traveling to India, there’s a risk of typhoid. In Africa, you risk contracting yellow fever.

During a travel consultation, Dr. Stein can advise you on which vaccines are recommended for your destination to protect your children from diseases that spread in that region. Since vaccines can take up to six weeks to become active and other vaccines may require two doses, it’s best to schedule your travel consultation a few months before your trip. It’s also important to make sure your child is up to date on routine vaccines before you take off.

What to do if you get sick on vacation

Exotic food, beverages, weather, and time changes can affect your child’s well-being on an international trip. While vaccines can protect against regional diseases, other minor health issues could derail your trip.

Traveler’s diarrhea, for example, is one of the most common health issues that can afflict both children and adults on vacation. Dr. Stein can recommend what to pack to treat this common health issue and steps you can take to reduce your risk of getting hit with tummy troubles and other health issues.

Travel risks

Depending on your destinations and planned activities, Dr. Stein can make recommendations you may not have thought of that can help keep your kids safe and comfortable throughout your adventures. For example, protecting your family against bug bites and plants that may be common in areas you’re traveling to, or water safety tips.

She can also recommend how to pack your own first aid kit so that you’re prepared for various health issues that may affect your family. This kit is especially important if your child has allergies or health issues.

With summer coming up, schedule a travel consultation with Dr. Stein if you’re planning a fun and exotic international adventure for your family this season or in the fall. Call our office to schedule an appointment or request one online.
